Kerry,

Keep Ohio Beautiful Month is in full swing! Spring is here and Keep Ohio Beautiful affiliates have plenty of volunteer opportunties during the Great American Cleanup. Please visit the Keep Ohio Beautiful website for local affiliate contact information. Great American Cleanup events and volunteer opportunities are listed on the website.

2008 State Roadway Cleanup is a Success!

cincinnati roadwayThe Ohio Department of Transportation and Keep Ohio Beautiful coordinated the 2008 State Roadway Cleanup on March 28-29th. This initiative was part of the Great American Cleanup of Ohio.

Keep Ohio Beautiful affiliates coordinated 19 roadway cleanup events over two days. All 12 ODOT Districts also coordinated cleanup activities with their employees and Adopt-a-Highway groups. In total, 500 volunteers, Adopt-a-Highway groups, and ODOT workers picked up 7,915 bags of trash from our state roadways. That equals 11.3 tons of trash!

The kickoff event in Toledo was postponed due to snow during the Roadway Cleanup weekend. KOB, ODOT District Two, Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful, and Keep Perrysburg Beautiful will be holding the State Roadway Cleanup this Saturday, April 19th. The rally will be held at the Erie Street Market in downtown Toledo, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Sue Smith, National Director of Education for Keep America Beautiful, will be on hand to serve as the Master of Ceremonies.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to make this year's event a success!

 Keep Ohio Beautiful Month

KOBKeep Ohio Beautiful Month is underway and there is a wide array of activities taking place around the state. KOB affiliates are coordinating litter cleanups, recycling and appliance collections, Earth Day events, and beautification projects. Many other cities, counties, and Solid Waste Districts are also coordinating activities to support Keep Ohio Beautiful Month, thanks to grants awarded by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The litter cleanup grants, which range from $200 to $2,500, are aimed at encouraging community participation in April's Keep Ohio Beautiful Month activities.

This Saturday, April 19th, the Erie County Solid Waste District will host their Earth Day Extravaganza from 11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Sandusky Mall. Keep Montgomery County Beautiful will coordinate a cleanup at the Five Rivers Metropark from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30. Lorain County Beautiful will host their Household Hazardous Waste Collection from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at two locations in Lorain County. Keep Lakewood Beautiful will also hold their Great American Cleanup event this Saturday.

These are only a few of the events taking place this week and there are many more for April 26th. We invite you to join our affiliates in making a difference in Ohio. Together, we can all keep Ohio beautiful for generations to come.

 Scotts Smart Water Pledge
Take the Pledge and support Keep Ohio Beautiful!

ScottsIn an effort to conserve water this spring and summer, The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company and Keep America Beautiful have teamed with baseball's top groundskeeper, David Mellor, on an educational campaign to help homeowners learn the simple steps they can take to help maximize the water-saving benefits of lawns via the ScottsŪ Water Smart Pledge.

By taking the Scotts Water Smart Pledge, homeowners will learn how to grow and maintain a healthy lawn while saving thousands of gallons of water every year.

With the Scotts Water Smart Pledge, we're encouraging you to get involved. Beyond saving water, homeowners who take the Scotts Water Smart Pledge will be entered for the chance to win several great prizes, including the potential to win grant money for your KAB affiliate to build or improve a community green space:

  • Every week for 10 weeks, Scotts will award $1,000 to a KAB affiliate
  • At the end of the 10 week period, one KAB affiliate will win a $10,000 grand prize to put towards building or improving a green space for their community

This is where you can help! The weekly winners and grand prize winner are determined based on the number of people who take the "pledge" in your community. So click here to take the pledge and support Keep Ohio Beautiful. Just select KOB on the affiliate drop down list.

 Sponsor Spotlight!

Honda 2Honda of America sponsored a one year grant for the Keep Ohio Beautiful website. From the start of Honda's existence, the company has worked to reduce the environmental impact of its products and manufacturing operations. Honda has accomplished this by implementing new products, processes and technologies that are good for society and business.

Today, Honda is working on a broad range of "Green Factory" initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of its manufacturing operations. These new and ongoing efforts by Honda associates in departments throughout the company focus on reducing CO2 emissions, water use, air emissions and generation of waste materials.

More than 15,000 Honda associates live in dozens of Ohio communities, and many are actively investing their time and talent in charitable and community organization. They volunteer their service and provide leadership on key community boards and initiatives.

 Did You Know?

recycleThe manufacturing of glass containers for a wide variety of product lines includes food, beverages, toiletries, perfume, cosmetics, and medicine. The glass container is a superior package due to its clarity, inertness, and recyclability. Glass can be recycled indefinitely without loss of quality.

  • The energy saved by recycling one glass container can light a 100-watt bulb for four hours or power a television for 1.5 hours.
  • Glass can be recycled again and again with no loss in quality or purity. Glass containers go from recycling bin to store shelf in as little as 30 days- again and again.
  • In 2006, glass made up 5.3% of the municipal solid waste stream by weight, and of that, 25.3% of all glass containers were recycled. For glass beer and soft drink bottles, 30.7% were recycled that same year.
  • Recycling glass reduces consumption of raw materials, extends the life of plant equipment, such as furnaces, and saves energy.
  • Today's glass containers are also more than 40% lighter than they were 20 years ago.

Facts found on the Glass Packaging Institute website and the Recycling Means Business report, published by ODNR, Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention.

Kind Regards,

Kerry Crossen
