Kerry,

April is here and it's officially Keep Ohio Beautiful Month!

KOB affiliates are busy this time of year with litter cleanups, recycling events, and beautification projects. Over 70 community improvement projects are being coordinated during April and May as part of the Great American Cleanup of Ohio. Volunteers are needed for many events. If you would like to be involved please visit the Keep Ohio Beautiful website for more information.

 State Roadway Cleanup A Success!

roadway The State Roadway Cleanup, a Great American Cleanup of Ohio event, was a big success! The cleanup was sponsored by Keep Ohio Beautiful and the Ohio Department of Transportation and was held on March 30-31st.

Keep Ohio Beautiful affiliates, ODOT, and Adopt-a- Highway groups conducted litter cleanups on state roadways in 80 Ohio counties. Volunteers collected 13,051 bags of trash over the two day event. That equals 261,020 lbs. of trash!

The State Roadway Cleanup was a new project for the 2007 Great American Cleanup of Ohio. A kickoff event was held in Columbus near the interchange of I-70 and West Broad St.

Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, ODOT District 6 Deputy Director Tom Wester, ODNR Deputy Director Anthony Trevena, and KOB Board President Kimberly McConville were all there to lend their support. They planted a tree at the I-70 and West Broad Street interchange before volunteers spanned out for the litter cleanup.

Congratulation to everyone on a job well done! The State Roadway Cleanup is sure to be an annual event.

Hancock County SWMD Plans Spring Events
 Volunteers Welcome!

Hancock county The Hancock County Solid Waste Management District manages solid waste planning and the development of recycling opportunities for residents. They provide residents with the most up- to- date solid waste, recycling and litter awareness information available.

April is a busy time for everyone and in Findlay, Ohio it's no different. The district launched a new public awareness program featuring "bottle bin" recycling containers, which are available at community events for recycling purposes. A Used Oil Collection Event will be held on the 18th - last year they collected 3,550 gallons of oils! Appliance Recycling will be held on the 21st; in the past Hancock County has collected 448 appliances from residents.

The District doesn't stop with these collections-they also host "Litter Awareness" week when several activities take place throughout the county. They host the Church bulletin collection, clean your files day, compost education, Earth Day activities, beautify your neighborhood day, clothing collection drive and of course a community litter clean up.

On the last Saturday of April the District coordinates hundreds of volunteers for a litter & debris clean up. There is a central location in downtown Findlay where they host activities that allow everyone to bring their materials. 1,200 participants were involved in the countywide cleanup last year. Following the cleanup, many volunteers enjoyed the appreciation luncheon sponsored by the District.

Hancock County is still accepting participant registrations for this event. Volunteers can contact the office at 419-424-7210 or via website at: www.HancockEnvironment.com.
