Kerry,
Hello summer! Memorial Day is the unofficial
start to summer for most people as they enjoy
outdoor cookouts and ball games. While you are
outside, be sure to take a look around you to
enjoy the Ohio scenery. Hopefully there is not
litter there to spoil your view!
Over 70
community improvement projects were coordinated by
KOB affiliates during April and May as part of the
Great American Cleanup of Ohio. Litter pickup and
prevention does not stop with the end of spring,
though- be sure to do your part to keep our state
clean!

Great American
Cleanup A Success!
The
Great American Cleanup (GAC) 2007 was a success!
The GAC is the nation's largest volunteer
cleanup and community improvement program.
Sponsored nationally by Keep America Beautiful,
the event takes place nationwide during the
months of March, April and May.
Over 150
GAC events occured around the state of Ohio
during these three months. Over 40,000
volunteers participated! Projects included
cleanup events, recycling collections, river
sweeps, graffiti paint outs, school makeover
events, beautification and planting events, and
Earth Day celebrations.
There were
several new and exciting projects implemented
during the GAC this year. Keep Cincinnati
Beautiful led three "School Makeover" projects
that included new school signs, butterfly
gardens, and new greenscaping on school grounds.
Keep Akron Beautiful unveiled their "Operation
Coverload" project, a partnership project with
ODOT and the State Highway Patrol to enforce
covered load laws.
Keep Toledo/Lucas
County Beautiful and Keep Grove City Beautiful
sponsored Shred Days for citizens to
shred documents. Defiance County Environmental
Services and Hancock County SWMD Environmental
Services held appliance recycling drives.
Waterways were not left out either! Keep Allen
County Beautiful and Cuyahoga Falls Litter
Prevention and Recycling organized river
cleanups in their communities.

Keep Grove City
begins "Year of Recycling!" Keep Grove City Beautiful
is a non-profit volunteer effort supported by
the City of Grove City and SWACO. Grove
City is a community of 32,000 people located
in the southwest corner of Franklin County, 10
miles south of Columbus, Ohio.
April and
May have been a busy time for KGCB as they
kicked off their "Year of Recycling". At
Environmental Day, April 21, 2007, over 300 cars
were checked in as participants. Those cars
brought in 11.2 tons of paper, 400 lbs. of
cardboard, 2.3 tons of computer equipment, 152
pairs of eyewear, 160 cell phones, 1500 books,
58 ink cartridges and 188 items for the food
pantry. It was a great event and could not have
been done without the support of KGCB's awesome
volunteers.
KGCB has partnered with
SWACO, ODNR and Wal- Mart's Transportation and
Distribution Center to kick off a bottle and can
recycling program. Giant pop bottle replicas
with graphics specifically designed for the
Parks and Recreation Department will be used at
more than 45 events this year.
Wal-Mart's
Transportation and Distribution Center has
partnered with KGCB again, and in June they will
introduce "Einstein" their new recycling bin
character to the community. Why Einstein?
Because it is smart to recycle!
Anyone
interested in helping with Grove City's
recycling effort can call 614-277-1104

Did You Know?
Composting is
easy---on both the environment and your wallet!
Summer is here and that
means compost piles should be in full swing!
Here are just a few reasons to get started on
your own compost pile.
Compost is one of
nature's best mulches and soil amendments, and
you can use it instead of commercial
fertilizers--which saves you money. Using
compost improves soil structure, texture, and
aeration and increases the soil's water-holding
capacity. Understanding how to make and use
compost is in the public interest, as the
problem of waste disposal climbs toward a crisis
level.
Composting is easy! Almost any
organic material is suitable for a compost pile.
The pile needs a proper ratio of carbon-rich
materials, or "browns," and nitrogen-rich
materials, or "greens." Among the brown
materials are dried leaves, straw, and wood
chips. Nitrogen materials are fresh or green,
such as grass clippings and kitchen
scraps.
For more information on how to
start composting today, visit the compostguide
website.
