The History of Keep Ohio Beautiful
|
|
In 1986, the
Ohio General Assembly established the Keep Ohio Beautiful
(KOB) Commission with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources
Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention (DRLP.)
Later that year, Ohio became the 12th state to be certified
in the national organization of Keep America Beautiful,
Inc., (KAB.) KOB's tenure with DRLP was recognized
by KAB as having one of the best comprehensive litter prevention
and recycling programs in the country.
|
|
|
After three
years as a certified state organization, KOB was recognized
by KAB as a first place winner for having the best overall
KAB State program. The program was honored for the
comprehensive litter prevention and recycling campaign with
the "Recycle Your Shoes with Ohio Zoos".
|
|
|
Four major
zoos in Ohio conducted a recycling drive collecting used
athletic shoes for reprocessing into playground surfaces
and running tracks. The Toledo Zoo received first
place and installed a donated playground surface at their
new Toledo Mud Hen Stadium. This imaginative environmental
campaign was later adopted by the American Zoological Association.
|
|
|
During 1989,
KOB established an annual statewide awards program.
This competitive program recognized individual, corporations,
civic groups, government agencies and certified KAB communities,
for their outstanding efforts in litter prevention, recycling
and beautification. In 1990, KOB incorporated the
"Pride in Public Housing" campaign. This campaign
was a national "Take Pride in America" winner in 1991 and
1992.
|
|
Over the years, KOB has certified an additional 17 communities,
bringing the total to 45, the third largest state affiliate
in the KAB system.
|
|
|
In 1997, Keep
America Beautiful honored the KOB's Executive Coordinator
with the "Professional Leadership Award," given to a coordinator
who has provided strong leadership to the local affiliates
and promotes the KAB philosophy.
|
|
|
After an ODNR
reorganization in 2002, KOB left the Division to become
a 501(c) 3 organization, thereby enabling the program to
expand and seek more private and public partnerships.
|
|
|
The inaugural
board, comprised of Ohio affiliates, created the first set
of bylaws, establishing a banking account, and assisted
in the KOB programs during the transition. The volunteer
board met at least quarterly to assure that KOB continued
to be in good standing with KAB. In addition to distributing
supplies and materials, the KOB board members coordinated
Great America Cleanup events around Ohio and gathered affiliate
information for the KAB progress reports.
|
|
|
In 2004, KOB
teamed with the Ohio Department of Transportation to distribute
material and supplies to KOB Affiliates participating in
the national Great America Cleanup.
In January,
2005, an expanded board was appointed and is currently working
to re-establish state-wide support for affiliates.
